We all have our favourites when it comes to food. My favourite food would be the Classic Ceasar's Salad. Now this is one dish that would make me travel out just to get the best Ceasar's Salad around town. As it stands, TGIFridays hasnt failed to let me down on their Ceasar's Salad. A huge portion but done extremely well. The next time you go to Fridays, and can't decide what to have, be sure to try their Classic Ceasar's Salad. Let me tell you a little about how Ceasar's Salad came about.

The creation of Ceasar's Salad has been attributed to an Italian, Ceasar Cardini, who at the time was a restaurateur in Tijuana, Mexico. According to records, supplies in the Cardini establishment ran short one holiday weekend in 1924. Ceasar experimented and that evening the Ceasar's Salad was born. "Take everything to the table" he said, "and make a ceremony of fixing the salad". Let guests think they're having the specialty of the house". Later, it was voted " the greatest recipe to originate from the Americas in fifty years" by the International Society of Epicures in Paris*.

For purists, ceasar salads are made from simple, fresh ingredients, and contain fresh garlic (used to flavor the oil), cold, dried heart of romaine leaves, fresh ground pepper, a dash of salt, imported olive oil, fresh lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce (where the anchovy flavor came from), homemade croutons and Parmesan cheese. The cheese is usually grated in front of you. More upscale restaurants may prepare caesar salads right at your table (tableside), although these have been more difficult to find.

Of course over the years, ceasar's salad has been improvised to meet our taste buds. My favourite mix of ceasar salad is when its topped with bacon bits, turkey ham, cajun chicken with olives. Now that's rich and yummy!

For those who want the ingredients to a simple but tasty ceaser's salad, here you go:

INGREDIENTS
Baby Romaine and Lolll Rossa leaves
Cherry Tomato
Parmesan Cheese
Garlic Croutons
Bacon bits, or cajun chicken, or turkey ham, or just mixed them all together
Olives

For dressing:
3 medium sized eggs, 2-3 cloves finely chopped garlic, 3 anchovies
1 tsp worcestershire sauce, 2 tblsp lemon juice, 1 tsp dijon mustard, 200ml extra virgin olive oil

For Croutons:
6 slices french baguette, 20g butter and garlic

Method:
1. Dressing:Using a food processor mix the eggs, garlic, anchovies, worcestershire sauce, lemon juice and mustard until smooth. Finish off by folding in the olive oil to produce creamy dressing.
2. Put the leaves into a salad bowl and toss the leaves gingerly with the dressing. Mix well and top it with the croutons, bacon, tomato, olives, and parmesan cheese.
3. Serve immediately.

One of the least romantic days of the year is Valentine's Day. Yes you heard me correctly. The majority of men act like robots, purchasing flowers and chocolate for their sweethearts because that is what everyone else is doing. Many people celebrate the day out of obligation rather than celebration. Today we celebrate valentines day with roses, chocolates, and candle light dinners, but is it really what Valentine's day is all about? To answer that, let me take you through the history of Valentine's day, how this special day came about.

Valentine's Day- Not what it used to be!

February 14 is Valentine's Day. Although it is celebrated as a lovers' holiday today, with the giving of candy, flowers, or other gifts between couples in love, it originated in 5th Century Rome as a tribute to St. Valentine, a Catholic bishop. For eight hundred years prior to the establishment of Valentine's Day, the Romans had practiced a pagan celebration in mid-February commemorating young men's rite of passage to the god Lupercus. The celebration featured a lottery in which young men would draw the names of teenage girls from a box. The girl assigned to each young man in that manner would be his sexual companion during the remaining year. In an effort to do away with the pagan festival, Pope Gelasius ordered a slight change in the lottery. Instead of the names of young women, the box would contain the names of saints. Both men and women were allowed to draw from the box, and the game was to emulate the ways of the saint they drew during the rest of the year. Needless to say, many of the young Roman men were not too pleased with the rule changes. Instead of the pagan god Lupercus, the Church looked for a suitable patron saint of love to take his place. They found an appropriate choice in Valentine, who, in AD 270 had been beheaded by Emperor Claudius. Claudius had determined that married men made poor soldiers. So he banned marriage from his empire. But Valentine would secretly marry young men that came to him. When Claudius found out about Valentine, he first tried to convert him to paganism. But Valentine reversed the strategy, trying instead to convert Claudius. When he failed, he was stoned and beheaded. During the days that Valentine was imprisoned, he fell in love with the blind daughter of his jailer. His love for her, and his great faith, managed to miraculously heal her from her blindness before his death. Before he was taken to his death, he signed a farewell message to her, "From your Valentine." The phrase has been used on his day ever since. Although the lottery for women had been banned by the church, the mid-February holiday in commemoration of St. Valentine was still used by Roman men to seek the affection of women. It became a tradition for the men to give the ones they admired handwritten messages of affection, containing Valentine's name. The first Valentine card grew out of this practice. The first true Valentine card was sent in 1415 by Charles, duke of Orleans, to his wife. He was imprisoned in the Tower of London at the time. Cupid, another symbol of the holiday, became associated with it because he was the son of Venus, the Roman god of love and beauty. Cupid often appears on Valentine cards.

So that is how Valentine's day came about. Now it is rather romantic for a guy to give the girl he loves roses, chocolates, or maybe even take her out for dinner, but don't do it because you have to do it. Do it to celebrate this day! Most girls would love to be pampered every other day. Going out of the way is an act of love done only if the heart chooses to do it, if not it's just another obligation. So since we have all made Valentine's day a must celebrate day, then celebrate it with true love! Make your loved one's feel special on this one day, but remember do it out of LOVE!

A couple i know pretty well, on a long distance relationship, celebrated valentine's day talking to each other on the phone while eating ice-cream in an ice-cream parlour. Neither of them had spent a penny on the other, but they both spent loads of their time on the phone with each other. Don't make valentine's day all about money, just do it out of love. What ever it may be, making someone feel special is always a good thing.

Birthday Strudle

It is November 9th, 2004! What is so significant of this date? Well, it is Jessica, one of my bestest best friends' 18th birthday. Since it's her birthday, i am gonna dedicate this blog to her.

It's 3.15pm, Jessica walks towards Ali Maju (the hang out mamak at college), stops and turns and gives me that "oh you shouldn't have planned!" stare. Inside sits all her friends filling three tables, and on the table a foot long blueberry strudle with a candle. Yummy! That was our cake for Jessica, as there weren't any good bakerys around, so we thought of a rather messy idea of getting a foot long strudle from Strudles. Well its the thought that counts.

There are some food experiences in this world that should only really be enjoyed in their place of origin. If they were to be prepared for you anywhere else they would lose that marvellous sense of place that they evoke so well. They belong in that place, they taste best in that place, and they should be eaten only in that place.

For a Malaysian, laksa must be dished- up piping hot in a crowded, noisy coffee shop in your neighbourhood area (also known as tasty 'mamaking')

I start my blog today with a thought i had while eating laksa at the 'Laksa Shack'. I must admit, it is my favourite Malaysian dish. So what is the big deal with Laksa? After doing some research, i find it so amazing how laksa is used to represent Malaysia, united by its 3 major races.

Now Laksa is a typical Malaysian dish as its ingredients are contributed from its 3 major races, which are the Malays, the Chinese, and the Indians. If you take a good look into your bowl of laksa waiting to be eaten, you would notice that it has large quantity of ingredients in it. Let us first start with the noodles. Noodles is originated from the chinese as the curry is an Indian thing. To top this dish with the large quantity of spices, we have different types of malay spices which was a big favourite among the Nyonyas. There you have it, how a delicious simple dish of laksa can represent the citizens of Malaysia.

Today we have loads of different types of laksas. Some of which are Curry Laksa, Assam Laksa, Sarawak Laksa, Bali Laksa, Johor Laksa, Kelantan Laksa, Laksa Kedah, Laksa Patani, Penang Laksa and lots more!

Has anyone ever thought of creating your own type of laksa, garnished with all your favourite ingredients? It would be quite fun to here all your crazy ideas, so do post them! As for now, im going to have some laksa fun in the kitchen.

I found this article on 'kissing' in "The Malaysian Women's Weekly" which i find particularly interesting as its published in a Malaysian magazine. This is simply because I find Malaysia a country who cannot accept the general view of its people.

As a student of law, I have studied a little on the Malaysian Constitution, and can clearly see that this is not a very open-minded country. Yes, we are allowed to follow are own religious law, but if you look closely you see that we still are grounded by lots of the Islamic laws.

As for today, i want to highlight this article that was published in the august issue of the women's weekly simple because i feel that the more they publish, the more they encourage! You and I, both have heard lots of stories of people getting caught by the cops for making out in a public area. Well its Malaysia, and although its constitution has no such rule for non-muslims, we would still be considered breaking the law as it is said to be breaking an obligatory law of behaving immorally in a public place. I have not heard of such cases in any other countries, but if you have please tell us your story.

This sequence of numbers were given to me a month go in a question asking, " What do these numbers mean?" This question was part of a "KoKo Crunch" crossword puzzle i simply took part in. Now if you would like to attempt this question do not read the following paragraphs of this post till you give up or break the code. Some clues: there are 9 letters to the answer, moving the numbers around might make it easier to solve.

Here is the funny bit, i won this competition not by knowing the answer, but by simply guessing the answer. Now that i won, i was asked how i had answered all the questions. Now i have an answer for every other question except this one because like i said before i simply made a guess.

So here i am today, a 'simply guess code breaker', blogging about this sequence of numbers. I was pretty shocked when i saw the results as i never expected to make such an intelligent guess.

Well, to answer this question, it would be wise to re-arrange the numbers in increasing order. By doing so the sequence of numbers you can now see is the world's most famous mathematical progression, the FIBONACCI progression. Yes that is indeed the answer, FIBONACCI. A Fibonacci progression is a progression in which each term is equal to the sum of two preceding terms. Apparently flower petals follow the fibonacci numbers as well.

Now how many of you figured this one out? Well to those who did, congratulations! and those who did not, don't worry it is not the end of the world. Just think of it as a bit of trivia. After all i myself did not figure it out. I simply guessed the remaining letters.

Respect

Respect

According to the little oxford dictionary, the word "respect" means:

• 1 a feeling of admiration for someone because of their qualities or achievements
• 2 consideration for feelings or rights of others
• 3 (respects) polite greetings and right behaviour.
• 4 a particular aspect, point, or detail

VERB:

• 1 have respect for
• 2 avoid harming or interfering with
• 3 agree to observe a law, principle

Some people tend to misuse this word, and a whole misunderstanding would then take place. When this particular word is used at people like these in telling them that they are so disrespectful, the defence always heard would be," what makes you think you are not disrespectful?" Only a handful of people would except this critical comment and move into silence accepting it.

Now I am not trying to insult those who misuse this word, but I blog today on this topic to show you my opinion that respect is a strong word with a very strong meaning. In the situation above, the defence was not relevant as no evidence was shown that he/she (who commented) had shown disrespect. A Greek Mythologist once said that in order to the use a word, you must first have respect for that word, only then use the word without violating its true meaning.

I choose a clear and disturbing example of disrespect, where a guy goes around touching a girl all over jokingly without her consent, this in law is defined as assault. Here the guy has clearly no respect for the girl. Yes he may be assaulting her, but the only reason for doing so here was simply due to disrespect.

No offence to men, but looking at the actual meaning of this word (the bold ones), it looks like very few men know how to respect a woman. Yes, it takes alot, but the effort you put in is what we girls notice. Every woman would love to be treated with some respect.

This blog is just my opinion to the word "respect" and how it should be used. Therefore i hope I have not offended anyone in anyway. So the next time you use the word "respect", think about my opinion or open the dictionary.
